What is happening?
The City of Hoboken, in partnership with the Friends of Elysian Park, is implementing an organic
lawn care program. We’re focusing on improving lawns by building soil health and increasing
coverage of resilient grass species.
What is Special About This?
We will loosen the intensely compacted soil by deep-core aeration and spread grass seed. The grass seed blend is:
The seed blend is a mix of species that germinate at different rates. Some germinate within a few days and provide cover for the seed that takes longer to emerge. The grass will need time to get strong enough to support the traffic and use the lawn is intended for.
When will this happen, and for how long?
Seeding and aeration is scheduled for Tuesday, April 6 between 8:00am and 4:00pm.
How will this affect my Park experience?
The newly seeded lawn areas will remain fenced off for several weeks while the seed mix
germinates, and new grass begins to grow. Please help us care for our newly seeded lawn
areas by staying outside the temporary fences.
The dog park resurfacing project will likely take place in April 2021. The project features many added benefits that will improve the experience of dogs, dog owners, and general park goers. Some of the highlights include the excavation of the existing surface and installation of efficient drainage throughout the dog park area. This means no more big puddles and sopping wet dogs, which will undoubtedly please dog owners. Next, the contractors will be installing turf and will infill it with Envirofill, which is antimicrobial, long-lasting, and helps prevent odors. With the existing gravel gone and the new turf installed, dogs will stay cleaner and play for hours on end without getting stones lodged in between their paws. Stay tuned for more info on our big opening day celebration!
